Lucy Undying: A Dracula Novel

Del Rey: Ballantine. Sept. 2024. 464p. ISBN 9780593724408. $28.99. FANTASY
COPY ISBN
White’s (Mister Magic) latest reimagines the story of Lucy Westenra, one of Dracula’s brides, from three perspectives: Lucy’s diary as a human, Lucy talking to a therapist in the modern day, and Iris, a young woman on the run from her manipulative family. When Lucy and Iris meet, they find that their lives have more in common than they expected, and they may be able to create a happily ever after together. This queer, feminist novel is sure to delight fantasy and vampire fans. After being turned into a vampire, Lucy’s travels bring her into contact with all manner of people and other vampires, prompting strong character growth throughout the story. The pacing can slow down through three perspectives, but the cliffhangers at the end of each will keep readers turning the pages. White gives Lucy the story she deserves, as she is more than a mere footnote in someone else’s story.
VERDICT A great option for vampire fans looking for a woman protagonist, as well as for readers looking for a unique journey through time.
