Set in a government-sanctioned maison close (brothel) in 1870s France, this unromanticized portrayal of prostitution can be difficult to watch owing to the dark and graphic plot. That being said, it is also a fascinating, well-researched historical narrative of the period, with well-developed characters. The main focus here is the prostitutes' struggle to maintain control of their house because the vice squad is determined to retake it. It helps to have already watched season one, but it is fairly easy to pick up the story if just starting with the second season.
VERDICT With graphic content and violence, this series is intended for mature viewers. Recommended for those who like period dramas with a psychological edge.
