Knapek’s book is a fresh and simple take on the amigurumi crochet technique used to create cute, simple, three-dimensional toys and objects. The author begins with basic crochet tips and advice for reusing materials, such as saving bits of scrap yarn or repurposing old pillows for stuffing projects. The projects include key rings; toys of all sizes, including special comforting toys without any plastic components, for very young children; hats and mustaches with which to accessorize the toys; and Christmas baubles. The pictures for the assembly of each project are especially helpful, as that can be difficult. The conclusion encourages readers to create their own patterns from the basic shapes of the shown designs, but this section could have been much larger, especially since it is mentioned in the subtitle.
VERDICT A great introduction to amigurumi crochet and crafting three-dimensional creatures. Recommended for most public libraries.
