Teenager Felicity Baker is forced to leave her friends in London and accompany her mother and grandmother to a farm outside a small town in Wales. She thinks its only for a short time until her mother regains her strength after chemotherapy. Felicity dislikes her stern and cold grandmother Margot. While exploring the forbidden attic at the farmhouse Felicity comes across her grandmother's diary from 1941. She doesn't recognize the younger, wartime Margot, who is lively, curious, and very likable. As she reads the entries, Felicity discovers the reasons for her grandmother's brittle façade. Meanwhile, she makes some new friends at school, confronts a bully, and takes a stab at first love. In striving for maturity, Felicity confronts devastating loss and its aftermath. Well read by Eilidh L. Beaton, who presents teen, adult, male, and female voices and varied accents flawlessly.
VERDICT Recommended for those who enjoy coming-of-age stories.
