Marry Me a Little: A Graphic Memoir

When Minnesota legalizes same-sex marriage (two years before the Supreme Court made it the law of the land), two men decide to formalize their relationship. The heavy weight of “what this means to history” sits in the back of their minds as they navigate their love for each other, wanting to celebrate their marriage—and deciding whether or not they want to wear shorts to their modest courthouse ceremony (they went with business casual). Ignatz Award winner Kirby (Curbside Boys) depicts a personal look inside of a moment in history that’s both wildly significant and beautifully mundane. His playful art has layers where, after first glance, the smudges of color begin to signal the emotions of the moment. The joyous yellow in several of the marriage scenes is deceptively simple, but radiates so much feeling.
