Miller’s (
Vicksburg) chronicle of the U.S. Eighth Air Force has garnered a good deal of attention since the Apple TV series based on the book was released. What listeners may not know is that while the book was published in 2006, the audio, narrated by Joe Barrett, has just been released. Miller’s detailed account of the strategic bombing campaign of Europe in World War II is thrilling and vividly detailed with facts, statistics, interviews, and analysis. Aided by Barrett’s engaging narration, listeners will learn about the risks of taking a Boeing B-17 into combat far over Germany, facing flak and enemy aircraft with no fighter escort in sight. Miller also describes the bomber boys’ time when they were on leave, including favorite drinking establishments and dances at U.S. air bases. Strategy and history are mixed with the gut-wrenching fear of flying at 20,000 feet.
VERDICT This comprehensive, gripping account of WWII’s brutal and deadly air war is highly recommended for military and WWII history buffs as well as those who enjoyed the Apple TV series. Harrowing, fascinating, and insightful.
