Veteran romance novelist Cotugno (
Birds of California) creates a modern comedy of manners in this vibrant mashup of
Pride and Prejudice and
Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Ever since their short-lived reality series left the air, the five Benedetto sisters have been scraping by on notoriety and sponsored content. The second-oldest, Lilly, worries that being famous for being famous will trap her permanently despite her writing aspirations. When breakout superstar Charley Bingley moves into the same crumbling subdivision as the Benedettos and brings his brooding best friend Will Darcy with him, Lilly starts to think things might be looking up. Thérèse Plummer’s narration sparkles in this homage that works far better than it has any right to. As Lilly, Plummer nails the playful archness that has made Elizabeth Bennet an archetype for more than two centuries. When Lilly is forced to face the realities of her own prejudice, her devastation is expertly communicated. With all of the audiobook’s characters sharing the spotlight for at least one chapter, Plummer does an amazing job of giving each a distinctive voice that matches their character perfectly.
VERDICT Recommended for listeners of the lively romances of Emily Henry and Christina Lauren.
