Chizmar’s (Chasing the Boogeyman) latest is an immersive and engrossing slow-burn horror feast. When three college students in the 1980s take to the back roads of rural Appalachia to document roadside memorials for a school project, they soon find themselves enmeshed in strange happenings and evil designs. Creeping dread and excellent writing will keep readers up past their bedtime as they devour this book. The author deftly incorporates themes of friendship and the ugliness of racism with a compelling cast. Beyond the skillful writing, Chizmar weaves a rich tapestry of terror that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
VERDICT This is a must for any library keeping abreast of the current zeitgeist of horror. It will appeal to more literary readers as well, as Chizmar is an expert at his craft. Some good companion books are My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix, Edgar Cantero’s Meddling Kids, and Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Silver Nitrate.
