The fifth book in James’s “Outriders” series (following
Setup at Whiskey Gulch) features Olivia Swann, a clay artist whose sister has been abducted. To rescue her, Olivia turns to newcomer Becker Jackson, a former Delta Forces soldier and the newest member of Outrider Security. While relationships tend to move quickly in short romances, it’s almost alarmingly fast here, and a kind of “baby fever” permeates the book. Additionally, James tests the limits of suspension of disbelief as Olivia and Becker impersonate socialites with merely 24 hours of prep, and a crime boss fails to recognize his own wife.
VERDICT Libraries with tight budgets should look elsewhere for Western romantic suspense.
