Georgiana (Georgie) Grove is an anthropologist who lives in an unusual household in Washington, DC. As a young widow expecting her third child (her husband was killed in Vietnam), Georgie bought a neglected house with a sign over the door: “Home for Incurables.” Over the years, she invited students, strangers, and the homeless to share her house. In 2008, as she marks her 70th birthday, Georgie insists that her family (including a four-year-old grandchild) go with her on a canoeing adventure in northern Wisconsin. She wants to revisit the scene of the first tragedy in her life: the campground where her father supposedly killed her mother in a fit of rage in June 1941, when Georgie was only four. Her children Nicholas, Rosie, and Venus oppose the idea but reluctantly agree. They are right to be worried, as conflicts and troubles arise on the ominously named Bone River and Missing Lake.
