Introduced to readers in 2014 as Marvel Comics' first Muslim title superhero and the fourth incarnation of Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan is a 16-year-old Pakistani American teen from New Jersey who has lived a sheltered life protected by her loving parents. One evening she disobeys her folks, attends a prohibited party, and is soon in over her head. During a dream state after inadvertently swallowing a miniscule amount of alcohol she is instilled with superpowers and saves a popular girl from drowning by developing a huge hand that plucks the girl from the water. Thus begins Kamala's calling as Ms. Marvel. It's curious to have a graphic novel presented in an audio format; the story is told via a lot of sound effects and more than two dozen performers who reveal the story of Kamala's coming of age as a superhero. The audio requires close attention to discern all the nuances as the dialog and sound effects relate the tale.
VERDICT Recommended for young adults who value cultural differences and a character who tries to remain true to both her faith and her mission.
