Kamala Khan may seem like your average New Jersey teenager, but in Wilson's (Alif the Unseen) groundbreaking Marvel comic, Kamala has a secret identity with which she is still coming to grips. Kamala is the first Muslim American superhero, and she's able to stretch her body to amazing lengths. This audio presentation integrates sound effects, music, and multiple voices into the program; the audio productions of the "Ms. Marvel" series are being adapted directly from the comics rather than from a novel. This leaves Kamala with the task of voicing thought balloon-style descriptions, yet in the capable hands of Shanta Parasuraman, it hardly interrupts the flow. Kamala is relatable and refreshing. When guest star Wolverine shows up, Parasuraman's reading capably conveys that Kamala can barely suppress her geeky idol worship. Even so, she still has to conquer the villainous Inventor, voiced by director and adaptor Richard Rohan.
VERDICT A cross between a radio show and a narrative podcast, this is an engaging experience with the potential to connect with young adult audiences. Recommended.
