James’s (
The Déjà Glitch) latest offers a tantalizing twist on the forced-proximity trope in romance. After a recent breakup, Hollywood darling Olivia Martin is presented with an opportunity. A reality TV show proposes that she and an ex spend a month together in a house; if successful, they’ll each win a million dollars. The catch is that the ex in question is rising movie star Chuck Walsh, whom Olivia just broke up with in spectacularly public fashion. Olivia is hoping to forge a new path for herself, and this kind of financial prize could be a real boon, but is it worth putting her heart on the line? Nikki Massoud provides a lively and engaging narration of this second-chance romance, making the most of the comedic twists, witty banter, and simmering chemistry. Even so, listeners may tire of the premise, which creates contrived arguments and detracts from deeper character growth.
VERDICT While listeners seeking a more layered story may be disappointed, this rom-com should appeal to those who enjoy lighthearted romances in the vein of Maggie Knox’s All I Want for Christmas.
