Simply opening the Bible and reading it without guidance can be daunting. Realizing how imposing the book can seem, Hudson (Bible Atlas & Companion; 40 Day Bible Adventure) offers this resource to help decipher the entire work in five-minute overviews that summarize particular verses within the Bible, translating even difficult passages into readable prose. A time line runs across the bottom of each page, and there are helpful introductions to each book of the Bible. The author also identifies and introduces key biblical figures throughout. Hudson's underlying theory is sound; many people are looking for help navigating the Bible. His execution is a little more problematic as Hudson interprets the Bible for his readers, determining which people and passages are the most important in his opinion and leaving other passages out.
VERDICT This book will appeal to people wanting to simplify their reading of the Bible, but they should be aware that it would work best as a companion to the Bible itself.
