Emily Leverton hopes to make a better life for herself, having secured a respectable governess position and ending the life of crime forced upon her by her unsavory family. Life is safer, if a little dull, until Emily is discovered by a secret network of fellow governesses who want Emily to join them in monitoring misdeeds among the ton. On one of her first assignments, Emily goes undercover to a society ball where constable Zach Denholm, a self-made rich man, is also on a case. A saucy interaction, including a shocking air kiss, catches Zach’s attention. As Zach and Emily enter into an affair, their connection and secrets might just blow up both of their carefully constructed worlds. Ella Lynch and Rupert Channing alternate in narrating Emily’s and Zach’s points of view, deftly conveying their delightful banter and range of emotions. Both narrators capture the various accents of Victorian-era England and create an immersive sense of place.
VERDICT Lovise’s debut historical mystery romance is sizzling, gritty, and lots of fun. Recommend to listeners who also enjoy Manda Collins.
