OrangeReviewStarWould the United States enter World War II on the side of the Allies? Could Britain hold out in the face of relentless attacks by the Nazis? Would FDR be elected to a third term? These and other troubling issues plague the world in 1940 and serve as the background for this cerebral spy thriller. Anglo-American M16 agent Roy Hawkins is ordered to New York from recently Nazi-occupied Paris for an assignment about which he knows little. Arriving in New York, he finds a nation divided between isolationists and those who feel that the war cannot be won without the intervention of the United States. Brute force is secondary to thoughtful exposition and even sex scenes are more expressions of romance than steamy sheets—this is the thinking listener's spy story. Narrator Christopher Lane reads Dudley's prose in the conversational manner in which it was intended, and his skill with a variety of dialects is incredible.
VERDICT A highly recommended spy novel for all public libraries.
