Twenty-eight-year-old Vivvy Bouchet is an astrophysicist and a reluctant psychic. When she returns to Fort Worth, TX, after her mother’s death, her brother-in-law, police officer Mike Romano, asks her to help solve a cold case involving a young girl who disappeared without a trace from her own kitchen. Though Vivvy doesn’t think of herself as a psychic, her otherworldly abilities helped save Mike’s life when they were children, and even now, she can touch an object belonging to a victim and see a glimpse of what happened to them. In this case, Vivvy senses that the missing child is still alive. She joins forces with Detective Jesse Sharp, and together, they lure the perpetrator out, tangling with a shock jock, a crowd of angry conspiracy theorists, a shady correctional officer, and her mother’s ghost in the process. Narrator Karissa Vacker delivers a propulsive performance of Heaberlin’s (We Are All the Same in the Dark) latest, an intricate and layered supernatural thriller. Vacker’s characterizations are spot-on, capturing stubbornness, impulsivity, and intelligence.
