In her first book, musician and Instagram influencer McQuistin (@brutalrecovery) shares her journey with addiction and sobriety in this combination of memoir and support tool. In her teens and early 20s, she used alcohol to numb her depression and self-loathing. By the time she turned 25, her alcohol use had become untenable, and she knew she needed to make a change. But as for many people with substance-use disorders who are contemplating sobriety, taking even the first step was daunting, and staying sober long-term seemed impossible. McQuistin shares her journey through the first days and months of her sobriety and offers tips that worked for her. The book’s language is frank and encouraging and, because McQuistin got sober fairly recently and at a young age, her writing will likely appeal to younger readers.
VERDICT While this book doesn’t really offer any information about sobriety that hasn’t been discussed in other titles on the subject, the relatable writing style and encouraging voice make it a good addition to self-help collections.
