Lipsyte (
Home Land;
The Ask) dives into this rollicking tale of a pretentious and moderately successful punk-rock band prepping for their biggest show. Jonathan Liptak has recently changed his moniker to Jack—since his band’s name is The Shits, this means that he is now Jack Shit. The band and most of their quirky associates are college grads with supportive parents, but they just want to be genuine East Village denizens. Everything goes off the rails when the band’s charismatic front man and lead singer, the Banished Earl, goes AWOL, along with Jack’s bass. Soon, there’s a murder, and the ragtag band is off to search for the murderer; they seem to be in over their heads, but they might not be savvy enough to realize it. Lipsyte self-narrates this patchily plotted murder-mystery/thriller. He nails the slang and snarky wit, but unfortunately his voicing of specific characters is uneven. This clever, stylish, nostalgic portrait of the punk rock scene will make the right audience sing.
