This book, as well as the case (Plyler v. Doe) it covers, resides at the intersection of law and policy with a focus on education, immigration issues, and states' rights. Olivas (William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law, Univ. of Houston; coauthor, Education Law Stories) takes us through the labyrinthine and dramatic journey of a case on its way to the Supreme Court. Plyler v. Doe was filed in 1975 but did not reach the highest court until 1982. Olivas also lays out the case's history and background, legal commentary, and analysis, including implementation issues and challenges. Equal protection under the Constitution is at the heart of the Supreme Court's ruling. Thirty years later, Olivas explains that part of Plyler v. Doe's legacy is the decision's intellectual framework, which has helped strike down anti-immigrant laws in Arizona and Georgia and inform legislation like the (still unpassed) DREAM Act.
VERDICT A slim volume, almost half consisting of notes, it is highly readable, relevant, and well documented. For readers with interest in law, education, immigration, and public policy.
