Past a certain age, many people start to see their physical abilities slip away. They tire more easily. They get winded climbing stairs. They become more forgetful. A slow and steady decline in their remaining years seems inevitable. But that isn’t the case for award-winning journalist Bounds (Little Chapel on the River). This book is her story of how she faced her approaching fifties by taking up one of the most physically challenging amateur sports around: the Spartan Race, the series of obstacle races varying in distance and difficulty. The author went all in on the sport, training and practicing seemingly every spare minute she had. She describes in bracing detail the successes and setbacks she experienced when she joined the sport, including how it affected her personal and professional relationships and the moments of doubt and frustration she dealt with. The overall message is that it’s never too late in life to start something new and challenging.
VERDICT Rounds sets a high bar for herself and reminds readers that they can do the same. This would be an excellent addition to collections as both a sports book and a self-help book.
