Old Dog

This documentary, filmed in New Zealand, features Paul Sorenson, who for 40-plus years has been a shepherd and has developed a unique training style for the herding dogs that have been critical "partners" in maintaining his flocks. Although Sorenson retired from farm life in 2015 and moved to the beach, he still dabbles in shepherding by conducting free workshops for anyone interested in learning his techniques and philosophy. Sorenson is a laid-back, kindhearted fellow with an obvious passion for his dogs and the outdoors. The cinematography is breathtaking as the countryside of New Zealand forms the backdrop for this film. While these are working dogs, not house pets, it is evident that there is a relationship that extends beyond the mere task of herding. This film wanders like a flock of sheep over the New Zealand mountains, and therein lies its charm and appeal.
