In Casey’s (“Dirty Players” series;
Unwritten Rules) latest baseball romance, Matt “Big Mack” Mackenzie and Jamie DeLuca are at opposite ends of their professional baseball careers: Mack is nearing 40, a former star with a bad shoulder who’s been let go by his longtime franchise and snapped up by a Miami team for, possibly, one last season. Jamie’s a commanding, bookish catcher who, at 26, has just been called up for his first season in the big leagues. Jamie successfully pivots his childhood crush on Mack into a real-life hookup, and their covert relationship quickly becomes a source of support as each man tries to figure out the next chapter of his life. Casey’s M/M romance touches on thornier issues (such as homophobia in men’s pro sports), though through a fairly rosy, optimistic lens.
VERDICT A light, low-conflict choice for libraries developing their M/M sports romance offerings; this is a subgenre with robust online and indie readership, despite a smaller presence in traditionally published romance.
