From the title story, an eerie meditation on life's shifting patterns and changes, to the horrific story of one man's final journey, "An Ending," the 42 stories in this collection showcase the often bizarre, always enlightening works of one of the most distinctive voices in imaginative literature. Tem's prose paints vivid and compelling images. His stories feature people who contemplate death, sanity, love, loss, and other human issues from original points of view. Five stories are published here for the first time; the other tales span a timeframe from 1981 to the present. They include short stories ("Brain of Shadows," "A Visit Home") as well as a pair of entries from the multimedia CD
Imagination Box (Melanie and Steve Tem, Lone Wolf Pubs., 2001);—a play written for puppets, "The Mask Child;" and "Shuffle: a Fiction in 54 Cards," a virtual card deck.
VERDICT Though not to everyone's taste, this volume should appeal to the author's followers as well as to fans of experimental and nonlinear fiction.
