Janelle Cross isn’t upset about her ex-boyfriend Arnold getting engaged to her sister Amerie, with whom he is a better match. What bothers her is how cold Amerie has grown during the engagement, even as most of the burden of wedding planning has fallen on Janelle, a busy doctor. Meanwhile, best man Rome Martin has always liked Janelle, but she believes he does not. Rome quickly clarifies his former standoffishness, however, and they revel in their mutual attraction. Since Janelle and Rome will be at a resort with the rest of the wedding party for the next two weeks, the pair agree to spend one of those weeks exploring their attraction. Rome wants to take care of Janelle, who he sees struggling to understand her sister’s callous treatment. Janelle soon falls hard for Rome and treasures the time they spend together. They find in one another the unwavering support that is lacking in so many of their existing relationships. Bishop adroitly navigates difficult family dynamics while eschewing trite resolutions in a novel that highlights the importance of found family.
VERDICT Originally self-published and now traditionally published with bonus content, Bishop’s (“Lost & Found” series) scorching hot, smart, hilarious, and touching novel is highly recommended for all collections.
