Viewers first meet David at sunset on an idyllic ocean before they jump back in time with him to an Arizona prison populated by Hawaiians who have been transported to the mainland to serve their sentences in a for-profit penitentiary. It's in this place in the desert, far from home, that David discovers his Hawaiian roots with his fellow inmates. There are many sequences in the film of dances, songs, and other facets of island culture as the men embrace something that gives them a connection to their individual humanity. As with many documentaries set in the world of incarceration, the driving narrative force is the struggle for redemption in postprison life. Will David and inmate Hale be able to maintain the lessons they learned behind bars when they taste freedom?
