Overfed & Undernourished focuses on the increase in obesity in Australia and its causes. Liam, an 11-year-old who is overweight, is shown going about some of his daily routines. Interviews with his dad reveal reasons attributed to his son's weight gain including the ease of serving processed foods and their cost, which is much lower than that of healthier foods. Facts about the societal changes related to obesity, such as the advent of technology that has created a more sedentary culture and the prevalence of processed foods, are intercut with food advertisements, close-ups of people eating, and images of overweight individuals. Joe Cross, star of the book and video
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, makes an appearance to talk to Liam about making better choices. The solution for Liam is several months of dieting and excessive exercising away from home with his aunt and uncle. The film focuses more on what is wrong with society and less on how people can change.
VERDICT The overzealous use of eating and body images here offers shock value rather than a well-rounded documentary with a useful message. An optional purchase for public and academic Libraries, with parents being the targeted audience.
