Quilter and pattern designer Young (
Scrappy Improv Quilting) offers readers numerous suggestions for piecing their quilt backs. Suitable for all levels of quilters, especially beginners, this book includes basics, such as how to prepare for quilting on a sewing machine vs. getting it ready for a longarm quilter. For more advanced quilters, there are downloadable patterns for quilt tops, which are more difficult to make. This book contains an excellent sizing chart, measurements for lap, twin, xl and queen-size quilts, and instructions for adjusting techniques for custom sizes. Quilters who are looking for ways to use up their scraps or pursuing a low or zero waste crafting philosophy will appreciate the suggestions and patterns for a variety of scrap sizes and projects that get the most out of fabric. The use of illustrations, instead of photographs in some places, may make it hard for new quilters to visualize and follow the process. The images, however, are certainly useful to those who know a little bit about quilting. The author provides a good variety of options and projects.
VERDICT Quilters, or those aspiring to be, will find something to fit their style and their skill level.
