“Quilt as you go” is a popular method, as it avoids the struggle of maneuvering a finished quilt top, batting, and backing through a domestic sewing machine. Instead, quilt sandwiches are completed in smaller blocks that are then joined to make bigger projects. Schmitz-Noriega has long been designing crafts projects, and she brings wide variety to this volume. Most are smaller projects: purses, bags, pillows, dining-table accessories. The largest projects are lap and baby quilts, but the quilter who can master them can easily go on to bed-size quilts. The easy method cathedral quilt has great appeal. Presented here in a smaller project, it could easily be expanded. The author does a good job of introducing this scrap-friendly technique, building the decorative top on a foundation of batting and sometimes backing simultaneously. The instructions are well-illustrated, while the projects are beginner-friendly and will have great appeal for experienced quilters looking for a simple project or a gift.
VERDICT A great resource for home quilters, homemaker clubs, and young sewists.
