Dramatic and explosive plot developments continue the roller-coaster ride that is the Poldark franchise. In addition to the usual breathtaking scenery of Cornwall, the show also now partly moves to exciting turn-of-the-19th-century London as Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) takes up his new position as Member of Parliament for Truro. The economic suffering of the people of Cornwall plays a large role in the political maneuvering of several characters. There is both good and bad news for Drake and Morwenna (Harry Richardson and Ellise Chappell), with Drake's story being particularly compelling. The relationship between Ross and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) also takes some interesting twists and turns as he spends more time in London and she takes on more responsibilities at home. The series ups its game visually with more sophisticated settings and costumes in London as styles change from the formality of the previous century to the new Regency modes. Overall, this is one of the best seasons to date owing to the new design elements and the complexity of the plot. Bonus videos include "Cornwall to London," "The Journey of Ross Poldark," and "Costume Design."
VERDICT Very highly recommended for all video collections. [See Trailers, LJ 10/1/18.]
