A lot of hard work, both on and off the track, steers two race car drivers from animosity to romance in Caffery’s (
Olympic Enemies) steamy Formula One romance. It’s bad enough for superstar driver Kian Walker that his best friend and teammate is hurt and can’t race, but when he finds out that his new teammate is racing’s bad-boy, Harper James, he’s angry. The pair don’t hit it off, embarrassing themselves and their team in their first joint interview, and are soon told that they need to at least pretend to be friends. Both men are dealing with some deep traumas—Kian feels guilty about racing rather than helping his sister take care of their ill mother, and Harper is a former foster kid with abandonment issues. As the racing season continues, they are forced to spend more and more time with each other, and they soon develop deeper feelings. The novel has plenty of fun and romantic moments, but the story is unexpectedly heart-wrenching at times and contains a few plotlines that are never quite resolved. Overall, though, sports romance fans will be entertained.
VERDICT A solid enemies-to-lovers tale with a racing twist.
