Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, this gorgeously illustrated book portrays the LGBTQ+ rights movement a scene at a time. Measom (Michele Obama: A Photographic Journey) pieces together important moments throughout the history of the movement, from its first emergence in literature and songs of the 1920s to today’s activists fighting for equal rights under the law. Each section, arranged chronologically, starts with a brief historical essay describing the leaders and social fabric of the time, and how the LGBTQ+ community thrived (or did not) under the circumstances. Following this are images from the era—photographs, paintings, etc.—that complement the descriptions of life in each decade.
VERDICT While a solid primer for the LGBTQ+ movement, this should not be taken as a comprehensive look as it tends to focus almost exclusively on white members of the LGBTQ+ community, with few exceptions, notably Marsha P. Johnson. Still, this will be a good place to start for readers curious about LGBTQ+ rights throughout history, as well as the movement’s artwork and icons.
