Need to find a place of peace and quiet? Veteran travel journalist Thomson, winner of the 2019 Travel Writer of the Year Award given by the British Guild of Travel, turns her attention to those seeking quiet spaces in this stand-alone travel guide. Casting a wide net, Thomson explores 50 destinations (and mentions more than 100 more) spanning all seven continents. Each destination includes gorgeous color photos and information on how to get there, when to go, and helpful tips. Not included are the finite details such as addresses, maps, or costs involved, giving this guide more of an inspirational feel than a strict step-by-step manual. Destinations are grouped into five categories: “Into the Wilderness,” “Island Idylls,” “Soulful Contemplation,” “Silent Spas and Wellness Retreats,” and “Urban Oases.” Not for the low-budget traveler, the majority of locations mentioned are in Europe, and some can only be reached via extensive travel by plane or boat; the book does list a few sites in urban areas that might be more easily accessible.
VERDICT Not for fans of Disney World–type vacations. Instead, selective travelers seeking refuge from all the noise of daily life may enjoy this one.
