Corrie Mejía is a sexy, swashbuckling Indiana Jones–type archaeologist and an expert on the Aztec warrior Chimalli, who, it turns out, may be related to her. Ford Matthews is a by-the-book archaeologist who has caught all the breaks in his profession—prestigious jobs, grants, fellowships. Corrie and Ford have been competitors since grad school, with no love lost between them. Circumstances bring them together in the Mexican jungle as they search for Chimalli’s remains. Frankie Corzo ably narrates Segura’s fast-paced enemies-to-lovers debut romance, packed with intrigue and drama, including an abduction, roaring rapids, treacherous waterfalls, snakes, priceless stolen artifacts, and a tricky thief. The novel’s third-person narration alternates between Corrie’s and Ford’s perspectives, and Corzo captures the excitement and sizzle as the duo’s initially prickly relationship heats up. Although this adventurous romance entertains, listeners seeking deeper characterizations may be left wanting.
