Half sisters Lucy and Juliet barely know each other, and they couldn't be more different. Juliet lives an isolated existence in the quiet and quaint Hartley-by-the-Sea in England's Lake District. Lucy, meanwhile, has made a spectacular mess of her life in Boston thanks, in part, to their eccentric artist mother. When Lucy comes to stay with her older sister for a few months, she's expecting tea and a shoulder to cry on, but Juliet can barely tolerate the sister who got all their mother's attention. As Lucy's stay lengthens, both women find that, as different as they are, they each have something to learn from the other about forgiveness and family.
VERDICT While dramatic windswept hills and quirky villagers will satisfy the Anglophile reader and a romance for each sister will tug at heartstrings, in the end this novel is a family story about letting go of the past in order to embrace the future.
