Reimagined: 45 Years of Jewish Art

Podwal's endlessly imaginative celebrations of Jewish legend, history, and tradition are represented in the world's great libraries and museums, including the Free Library of Philadelphia and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Jewish Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Bodleian Library, the Israel Museum, the Jewish Museum in Prague, and the Museo Sefardi in Toledo, Spain. This title features more than 350 full-color, mostly full-page reproductions of drawings and paintings that became illustrations for the author's own books (e.g., A Book of Hebrew Letters; Golem) and titles by others, such as Elie Wiesel, Francine Prose, and more. Also featured are Podwal's Torah covers, ark curtains, and other tapestries, ceramic plates, even the Congressional gold medal he designed for President Ronald Reagan to present to Wiesel in 1985. Wiesel's appreciative foreword, a preface by novelist Cynthia Ozick, and Elisheva Carlebach's (Jewish history, culture, & society, Columbia Univ.) essay are taken from small catalogs of three of Podwal's solo exhibitions.
