Balogh (
Someone Perfect) begins her “Ravenswood” series with this absorbing entry. Devlin Ware has illusions that his beloved family is perfect, until he learns of his father’s numerous infidelities. Rather than accepting this as the social norm, Devlin tells the ton. For this indiscretion, he is banished by his family. After joining the army, he experiences all the hardship and danger inherent in the war against Napoleon. Hard-hearted when he returns after his father’s death, he sees Gwyneth, the woman he had loved and then abandoned when his family exiled him. Can he find it in himself to love again, and can Gwyneth forgive him for his betrayal? Balogh is superb at pulling at the listener’s heartstrings; her characters have such depth of feeling, and the issues are sincerely upsetting. Rosalyn Landor, a longtime performer of Balogh’s works, narrates with a deep and expressive voice. Her delivery is thoughtful, and she wonderfully creates distinct and well-rounded characterizations, bringing out the humor and the intense drama in this superb series starter.
VERDICT This production is sure to please Balogh’s many fans. Share widely with readers who enjoy Sabrina Jeffries, Lisa Kleypas, and Julia Quinn.
