Hoover’s (
Finding Perfect) latest contemporary romance explores the effect of one moment of reckless behavior. After serving a five-year prison sentence for a tragic mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to the town where the horrible events happened, hoping to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. However, the rest of her daughter’s family is intent on keeping Kenna away, particularly Ledger Ward, the best friend of her deceased fiancé. Ledger is unwilling to listen to Kenna at first but soon finds the value in understanding both sides of the story. Kenna’s point of view is conveyed partly through the letters that she wrote to her fiancé during her time in prison, which she eventually shares with Ledger. The narration of Hoover’s novel is split between Kenna’s and Ledger’s perspectives, skillfully brought to life in the audiobook by Brittany Pressley and Ryan West.
VERDICT A contemporary romance with wide appeal. Hoover’s novel realistically depicts reactions to heartache, and the narrators’ performances underscore the relatability of her characters.
