With this latest work, Kristofic continues to expand on the memories he shared in Navajos Wear Nikes, with more stories describing his travels, both physical and spiritual, crossing between Diné and American culture. His voice as a storyteller rings true from the rhythms of his words to the sprinkling of Navajo terms throughout. This work conveys Kristofic’s reflections as a white boy growing up on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, representing multiple times and places in his life in and around the Reservation, and in other parts of the country. The episodic nature of the narrative is useful for focusing on particular concepts and aspects of Navajo life. The author succeeds in using recollections of his personal life along with his experiences reporting for Navajo Times and Native Peoples Magazine to illuminate Navajo culture and spirituality.
VERDICT An excellent book for general readers and anthropologists wanting to learn more about the joys and challenges of being a bridge between two cultures.
