OrangeReviewStarEditor Min's (Paths to the Triune God) collection of essays grew out of a 2010 conference on the application of the legacy of medieval theological to contemporary religious issues, and the result is fascinating and various. Marilyn Adams addresses traditions of friendship in the face of evil, Kevin Madigan uses the medieval tradition of exegesis to challenge the very underpinning of historical-critical method, Ingolf Dalferth discusses philosopher Martin Heidegger's notion of limits to possibility in the light of the doctrine of divine omnipotence, Pim Valkenberg reminds us of early—and remarkably open and fresh—approaches to Islam in the writings of Thomas Aquinas and Nicholas of Cusa, and Min himself applies Aquinas to contemporary theologies.
VERDICT A learned and thought-provoking rehabilitation of medieval methods in the context of modern dilemmas, certain to appeal to patrons in academic libraries, seminaries, and many individual readers.
