Sebastian Rudd is not your typical lawyer. His office is a customized van, and his only employee is his driver, who also serves as office staff, bodyguard, and advisor. Rudd takes cases other lawyers don't want. His clients include a cage fighter, a mobster, an innocent man, and a serial kidnapper. Mark Deakins does an excellent job reading the novel and bringing out the characters' personalities. Listeners can hear the confident swagger of Tadeo, the fighter who has bludgeoned a referee with his fists; the kidnapper who doesn't value human life; and Rudd, who negotiates and uses the courts to get justice for his clients.
VERDICT Highly recommended for libraries where Grisham's other titles circulate well. ["Grisham devotees will enjoy a compelling and convincing plot propelled by a memorable protagonist who constantly defends his roguish actions and justifies his unconventional behavior": LJ 9/1/15 review of the Doubleday hc.]
