Part-Choctaw Charley Patton is generally considered the father of the Delta blues, influencing such musicians as Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson. He's not the only musical icon with Native roots, though, as Link Wray, a half-Shawnee guitarist, tore up the 1958 charts with his innovative power chording "Rumble." Codirectors Bainbridge and Maiorana shine a light on how indigenous performers (e.g., Jimi Hendrix, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Robbie Robertson) have impacted popular music. Part-Shoshone rapper Taboo (Black Eyed Peas) and heavy metal drummer Randy Castillo keep the beat rolling to this day.
VERDICT A rousing film, Rumble is well worth the watch.
