Hollywood screenwriter Sawyer Castle becomes tabloid fodder when he runs away from his famous best friend’s wedding. After a drunken night at a bar in Canoodle, CA, he wakes up in one of the Canoodle Cove guest cabins where Fallon, the owner’s granddaughter, deposited him the night before. Fallon gave up her nursing career to take over running the cabins when her grandfather’s Alzheimer’s became worse. While Fallon wonders how she can keep it all going, Sawyer starts to realize that Canoodle might just be the best place to hide from Hollywood. Their mild animosity becomes a reluctant friendship that turns into a loving partnership. The progression of their relationship feels natural and believable, although a misunderstanding separates them for a short time. That trope seems to distract from the otherwise heartfelt and often hilarious moments they share. Fallon’s realistic relationship with her grandfather is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, and Sawyer also forms a touching bond with him.
VERDICT The supporting characters give this slow-burn romance from Quinn (The Reunion) a healthy dose of humor and heart and make this story one to include in all romance collections.
