McDougall (Born To Run) found himself in a different world when he left the city to live on a small farm in Pennsylvania’s Amish Country. Agreeing to help a friend, he offered to take in a neglected and traumatized donkey and assist with the animal’s recovery. With overgrown hooves and matted fur, the donkey was on the brink of death. When McDougall learned that he’d need to give Sherman a job to help the donkey’s progress, the wheels started turning. A decade earlier in Colorado, McDougall had participated in a long-standing tradition of burro racing: a 26-mile race in the mountains alongside a donkey carrying a packsaddle. Enlisting the support of many other animals and neighbors, McDougall sets out on an oftentimes overwhelming challenge but along the way Sherman shows he has the power to bring people together.
VERDICT A humorous and heartwarming book about not only running with donkeys but about community, our connections with one another, and our abilities to persevere and overcome physical and mental challenges. [See Prepub Alert, 4/1/19.]
