In this witchy take on
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Jane is an orphaned healer witch teaching younger girls at Lowood School. When she receives a mysterious summons to Thornfield Hall to aid brooding Edward Rochester, she is astonished to discover there is more to her employer, and the goings on at his estate, than meets the eye. Strange occurrences abound, and as the danger grows, Jane must fight for herself and Rochester even as secrets about his late wife come to light. Fisher (the “Faery Rehistory” series) combines some beats of the classic tale with a multitude of fantasy elements including spirits, fairies, and spells, as well as a slow-burn romance. Inspired by instances in the original tale where Rochester refers to Jane as various magical creatures, Fisher decided to explore what would happen if Jane indeed met one of those descriptions.
VERDICT A pleasant, atmospheric romp that fantasy or romance fans will enjoy. There’s no need to be familiar with Brontë’s novel to enjoy this one.
