In Fisher’s (“Faery Rehistory” series) retelling of Jane Eyre, Jane is a witch. Or, as some would prefer, a “healer” (this avoids unwelcome attention). She has been working as a teacher at Lowood School, where she grew up, and is called to Thornfield Hall to assist the manor’s owner, Edward Rochester, with a delicate matter. Mr. Rochester is in need of a witch, one who may end a curse that befell the manor after his wife’s death. Jane soon finds herself caught between two unexpected predicaments. One: There are malicious supernatural forces at work at the estate. Two: She is falling in love with her employer. Chapters swap between Jane and Mr. Rochester’s points of view, with narration by Elizabeth Bower and Tim Bruce. Bower and Bruce bring excellent voices to these classic characters, with an appropriately stubborn, outspoken Jane and stuffy, restrained Mr. Rochester.
