Journalist Hutchinson (
The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible) questions the broad veracity of much of the story of Jesus as found in the New Testament on the basis of recent scholarship and discoveries. The author has taken a careful look at the most compelling textual and cultural criticism concerning the life and setting of Jesus of Nazareth and discovers that the new scholarship, while far from rendering Jesus's life or the creation of the New Testament false or fraudulent, tends to result in as many questions as answers. Hutchinson's conclusions are boiled down to "Yes, maybe." Still, this is a sound summation of the issues and the outlooks surrounding this fractious topic.
VERDICT An excellent conversation starter for study groups, perfect for public and seminary library collections.
