"I wish I could have taken a picture of the look on Johnny's face when I pulled out my gun and aimed it between his eyes." Hickman's (
Looking for Trouble; Breaking All My Rules) crackerjack opening sentence lays the groundwork for her compelling tale of marital cheating and subsequent revenge in Amber, AL. So who's holding the pistol? It could be almost anyone as serial adulterer Johnny Mayfield has a long list of women and their husbands who wish him dead. Johnny's wife Geneva has tried to make him happy, but Johnny would rather roll in bed with sassy Vivana who knows how to "work her assets in a way to make men swoon." Vivana's husband is a meek school principal who wants more out of his marriage than waiting for his hot wife to come home. There's plenty of creeping going on and one of Geneva's hairstylist friends nails it, "When two dangerous, deceitful, a*#holes get together there's bound to be trouble."
VERDICT Readers will enjoy the twist and turns in Hickman's tale, which has a definite soap opera vibe. We know there's a romantic train wreck ahead, but we can't turn away from the drama. Characters are flawed and we almost feel sorry for Johnny. Nah, check that. The man's a snake. Hickman's name should be well known by librarians. If not, this juicy tale is a great launching point.
