Famed rapper Nas and filmmaker Sjöberg present this achingly beautiful portrait of breakdancing youths in Uganda, Colombia, Cambodia, and Yemen. Although structural poverty defines their daily lives, every time someone like Tibisay, a ten-year-old Colombian, hits the dance floor, viewers can sense their powerful will to thrive, not simply survive. Sjöberg manages the feat early on of being both choppy in his hops to each of the four countries and deliberate in his pacing. But then he falls into rhythm with the dancers, and the emotive intensity of their movements is well matched with their powerful backstories. Sjöberg finds his directorial wheelhouse, and viewers are left wanting more.
VERDICT Recommended for most libraries.
