Self-proclaimed sports fan Weeks (The Legend of the Mick: Stories and Reflections on Mickey Mantle) delivers a book that contains stories about several baseball World Series, a best-of-seven series of games between the two league winners to determine an overall champion. It’s usually played in October. This compilation includes only the series that were considered major upsets, the ones where the favored team lost to an underdog. There are 22 such stories, and each contains histories of the opponents, how they made it to the World Series, highlights of each individual game in the series, and the numerous reasons why the victory was considered an upset. The quality of research is quite apparent too; a large bibliography and numerous statistical graphs finish off this work.
VERDICT Weeks’s leisurely writing style will appeal to most sports fans. Readers who love baseball will devour this recommended book.
